Físico soviético. Obtuvo un Ph.D. en el A.F. Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute en 1970 y llegó a ser director de este instituto en 1987. En 1966, con un equipo de investigación, desarrolló el primer dispositivo electrónico de heteroestructura de aplicación práctica y siguió a la vanguardia del desarrollo de componentes electrónicos hechos a partir de heteroestructuras, como el primer láser de heteroestructura. Su labor condujo a grandes avances en la tecnología de las comunicaciones. En 2000 compartió el Premio Nobel de Física con Herbert Kroemer y
Jack S. Kilby.
